HMD Global, the company that has been producing Nokia-branded smartphones for the past six years, has revealed its plans to launch its own line of mobile devices under the HMD brand. The announcement was made by the CEO of HMD Global, Jean-Francois Baril, in an interview with TechCrunch.
Baril said that the decision to create a new smartphone brand was driven by the desire to enter the market independently and to create a new world for telecommunications focused on consumer needs. He also said that both HMD and Nokia phones will co-exist, and that the company will collaborate with some exciting new partners that have not been revealed yet.
HMD Global was founded in 2016 as a licensee of Nokia, the Finnish company that once dominated the mobile phone industry. Since then, HMD Global has released several Nokia-branded smartphones, mostly running on Android operating system. However, the company has not been able to compete with the likes of Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, and other major players in the smartphone market.
By launching its own brand, HMD Global hopes to differentiate itself from the Nokia brand and to expand its portfolio with more diverse and innovative products. Baril said that the new HMD phones will offer a unique user experience and will leverage the latest technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing.
The first HMD-branded smartphone is expected to be unveiled later this year, along with more details about the company’s vision and strategy. Baril said that he is confident that the new brand will appeal to a wide range of customers and will create a loyal fan base.
“We are very excited about this new chapter in our journey. We believe that we have something different and special to offer to the consumers. We want to create a new world for telecommunications where everyone can enjoy the best of mobile technology,” Baril said.
