At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) last week, Apple made headlines by launching its highly anticipated Vision Pro headset. The device featured VisionOS system, aimed at developers, content creators, and professionals in the augmented reality (AR) field. However, price tag of $3,499 made it very expensive for ordinary users.
In response to this, Apple has revealed that it is working on a more affordable version of the Vision Pro headset. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the low-cost variant might be called “Apple Vision” or “Apple Vision One.”
The launch date and specifications are yet to be disclosed. But it is expected to be the budget-friendly version with slower processor compared to the recently released high-end model. Currently, the high-end Vision Pro comes with the M2 chip and the R1 chip. Additionally, the display of the low-end variant is expected to have a lower resolution, possibly opting for HD resolution with pixel optimization to enhance picture quality.
The premium Vision Pro boasts dual 4K resolution micro OLED displays, a component that contributes significantly to its cost. Apple may also reduce the number of sensors in the lower-end version, such as replacing a 3D camera with a regular camera and using a normal speaker instead of a spatial audio speaker.
Despite the differences in hardware, both the high-end and low-end versions of the Vision Pro will provide the same VisionOS experience. Apple’s move to develop a more accessible version of the Vision Pro headset demonstrates the company’s commitment to expanding the adoption of AR technology beyond niche professional circles.
As the technology matures and costs decrease, Apple aims to make AR more accessible to a broader audience, paving the way for exciting possibilities in various industries and everyday life.
