Apple Inc. is quietly delving into the world of artificial intelligence, aiming to compete with big players like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard.
The tech giant has created its own framework called “Ajax,” which serves as the foundation for building large language models, and they have even developed the chatbot service named “Apple GPT.”
Although Apple has been incorporating AI features into their products for some time, they were surprised by the impressive success of ChatGPT and Google’s Bards in the generative AI market. These products generate essays, images, and videos based on text prompts and have caught the attention of consumers and businesses alike.
Apple has made progress in certain AI areas, like photo enhancements and iPhone search capabilities. However, their voice assistant, Siri, has not seen much improvement. To strengthen their AI efforts, Apple hired John Giannandrea, a former Google executive, to oversee Siri and the machine learning teams with the support of Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, leading the AI initiative.
The Ajax framework is the foundation for developing large language models and powers Apple’s internal ChatGPT-style tool.
During a recent interview with Good Morning America, Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, confirmed that the company closely follows AI technology developments and expressed concerns about AI products.
While Apple’s plans in the AI space are not entirely clear, there are indications that a significant AI-related announcement may be made in the coming year (Apple GPT). This could potentially involve integrating language models with Siri, enabling the voice assistant to perform a wider range of tasks for users.
