MoU between NTPC REL and GACL
India’s first green ammonia and methanol project: NTPC RE Limited (NTPC REL) and Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited (GACL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New Delhi to fulfill green energy and green hydrogen goals and the Government of India’s efforts toward a carbon-neutral economy. Shri Harshad R. Patel, managing director of GACL, and Shri Mohit Bhargava, chief executive officer of NTPC REL, signed the agreement.
The MOU calls for collaboration in the fields of Renewable Energy, Green Methanol, and Green Ammonia, as well as the mutual exploration of opportunities for the supply of 100 MW RE-RTC (Round The Clock) power and the synthesis of 75 TPD Green Methanol and 35 TPD Green Ammonia for captive use in the production of various chemicals by GACL at its Vadodara and Dahej complexes in Gujarat.
NTPC Limited has been at the forefront of RE capacity development and is credited with introducing the nation’s lowest solar rate. NTPC REL, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC, was established in October 2020 to manage NTPC’s RE operations. This development follows NTPC’s announcement of its green hydrogen initiatives and aims to build the nation’s first pilot projects for manufacturing green methanol, establishing green hydrogen filling stations, blending green hydrogen into PNG, and green energy storage.
This will be the nation’s first commercial-scale Green ammonia and Green methanol production and would be in line with the Prime Minister’s vision for Atmanirbhar Bharat. NTPC is India’s largest power utility, having a total installed capacity of 69 GW dedicated to electricity generation (including JVs and subsidiaries). In order to expand its renewable energy portfolio, NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL) was established on 7 October 2020 as a wholly-owned subsidiary that will undertake Renewable Energy Parks and Projects, as well as business in the areas of Green Hydrogen, Energy Storage Technologies, and Round-the-Clock RE Power.
Incorporated in March 1973, Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited (GACL) is a state-owned chemical manufacturer. GACL is one of the largest Caustic Soda producers in India, with a production capacity of about 1,400 TPD at their Dahej and Vadodara complexes. GACL-NALCO Alkalies and Chemicals Pvt. Ltd. (GNAL), a subsidiary of GACL, is constructing an 800 TPD Caustic Soda Plant and a 130 MW (coal-based) Thermal Power Plant in Dahej.
