What is a UAN number?

On October 1st, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Universal Account Number for EPFO Employees to facilitate PF number portability.

EPFO provides its members with a 12-digit unique number known as a UAN. Each Provident Fund (PF) Account Number at EPFO is assigned a universal account number (UAN), It cannot be shared by two EPF members. Even if we change our jobs, the UAN number stays the same.

By using UAN, we can effortlessly transfer EPF balance even if we change our job from one organization to another, thanks to Universal Account Number.

When UAN is successfully seeded with KYC, it allows the user to access a variety of online services without the involvement of the employer.

Both UAN number and a PF number will be the same? What’s the difference between them?

UAN stands for Universal Account Number. Previously, PF numbers were changed with each new employment/ job (employer). This resulted in a significant amount of paperwork and a low long-term saving advantage provident fund.

As a result, the PF department implemented the “one account, one number” scheme. Every PF number is assigned a UAN number under this scheme. UAN can be linked to multiple PF numbers. This makes it easier to move and change jobs.

Who to Activate UAN?

Go to the EPFO website and look for the “Activate Your UAN” service. You will be taken to the UAN activation page. Submit your information, like your UAN, Member Id, Aadhaar number, Name, Date of Birth, and Mobile Number.

Your information should match EPFO data, including the member’s UAN and Aadhaar numbers, as well as the member’s name and date of birth. According to UIDAI records, members must have a valid mobile phone connected to their Aadhaar number. The member’s Aadhaar number, name, and date of birth must match their Aadhaar data.

How can I withdraw my PF without a UAN number?

If the employee has linked his or her Aadhaar card to their UAN, they can use the Composite Claims Form to make a direct withdrawal from the EPFO without the need for their employer’s attestation.

To make a withdrawal, those who have not linked their Aadhaar card details with their UAN must submit the Composite Claims Form along with their employer’s attestation.

How can I find out my PF balance without using UAN?

Can we use multiple UAN numbers?

Normally doesn’t happen but sometimes two UAN numbers may be allotted to an employee because of not filing the Date of Exit by the previous employer in ECR filing and/or the employee applies for transfer of service in the current establishment.

In such instances, we should report matters to concerned authorities through email, mentioning both the current and previous UAN. Concern authorities will verify the status of UAN, If two UAN is allotted; the old UAN is blocked and the current UAN is kept active.

Is it mandatory to transfer PF under a UAN when we change companies?

The UAN number is a unique 12 digit identification number allotted by EPFO to each employee. EPFO will manage all of your EPF accounts under a single UAN number. If we change your jobs, we only need to provide your employer with your UAN number. There is no need to transfer all of your previous EPF accounts.

I have two UAN numbers linked with Aadhar. How can I deactivate one UAN?

We can keep using the UAN to which your current PF account is linked.

We can withdraw the PF and Pension accumulation from an old PF account that is connected to the old UAN. After that, the respective old UAN account will be deactivated and closed.

How can I delete my current UAN number and get a new UAN?

The only way we can do it is by resigning from the existing position, taking a 2-months break, withdrawing the PF amount and joining a new job without disclosing the previous UAN number and hoping that a new UAN gets allocated.

But UAN is a unique number and only one number is meant to be used. With Aadhaar as a necessary KYC document, acquiring a new UAN may not be possible.
